The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Cygnet Theatre's production of Paul Zindel's 1971 Pulitzer Prize-winner is strong where the script is, and overstated where it isn't.Gamma Raysunleashes core emotions as Beatrice tries to stifle her two daughters, introverted Tillie and hair-trigger Ruth. As if afraid the play wouldn't work on its own, Zindel packed it with Expressionistic effects. As does Cygnet. These give the play size but tend to swarm the battle of souls onstage. The effects mightsnuff it altogether without Deanna Driscoll's outstanding performance as Beatrice. A volcanic, mercurial bully, she's alsoerrily gentle, even fragile, and amazing throughout. Critic's Pick.
