Farm Fresh at Ferry Landing
“This isn’t a fake farmers market; everyone here is a real farmer,” says Mary Hillebrecht the manager of the Coronado Farmers’ Market. Mary even let me buy a few pints of fresh picked strawberries before the market opened, if I promised to bring a friend next time. I enjoyed her enthusiasm and pride in our local market and promised her that I WOULD be back.
Usually, I peruse the over crowded farmers’ markets of SD merely sampling the freebies and don’t buy much of anything. The Coronado Market is different. Our market (for those who haven’t been) is mostly produce and flowers. Its high quality and reasonable prices make it a necessary stop for many islanders; plus, it’s the perfect size to get in, get what you need, and get out.
I regret that after living on the island for close to a year, this was my first trip to the market. The 2:30-6:00 hours had deterred me, but I’m now going to make this a priority every Tuesday.
