The world premiere of Edie Brickell and Steve Martin's new musical has the makings for a down-home, un-Broadway show. The bluegrass/country score, by Brickell, has an all-Americana feel. But the book stumbles over itself. And the combination of music and double-plotted text don't always jibe. Billy Cane comes home from World War II. Wants to write for the prestigious Asheville Southern Journal, whose acerbic editor renounced joy 20 years ago. Something will happen, eventually. Production values -- Walter Bobbie's excellent direction, Eugene Lee's minimalist set -- are tops. With much needed rethinking, the book could get there too.
