“A Christmas Carol is a moral tale, a reminder not to forget to be human and kind while we chase the carrot. Dickens’ England was in the middle of the Industrial Revolution and Dickens could see the dehumanizing effects of people working in factories while the factory owners made immense profits”, says playwright, Herbert Siguenza about his new play, “A People’s Cuban Christmas Tale” opening Dec 2, 2021 at OnStage Playhouse in Chula Vista. In 2020, following a spate of hate mail aimed at the community support for Black Lives Matter at OnStage, Artistic Director, James P. Darvas and the Board of Directors made a conscious decision to be part of the American Theatre BIPOC Movement for a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive theater community that fully affirms and celebrates all artists, especially BIPOC artists who have too long been silent out of fear of retribution. According to Darvas, “A People’s Cuban Christmas Tale” fits perfectly within this vision and offered OnStage Playhouse an opportunity to bring to the community a theatrical holiday treat based on a well-known Christmas story with a twist that will entertain, educate and perhaps, provoke. Siguenza, who is well-known within the theatre community as Founder of Culture Clash and “A weekend with Pablo Picasso” at the San Diego Repertory Theatre says “I adapted this classic moral and cautionary tale to remind us that there is always an alternative to greed and that we must find a drastic change within ourselves and our systems in order to survive into the next century”. The production includes 10 actors and a four-piece Cuban band bringing the traditional sounds of Cuba to this adaptation of a well-known story of Christmas loss and forgiveness. “A People’s Cuban Christmas Tale” opens Thursday, Dec 2 at 8pm.
