Decolonizing Aerosol Art
Decolonizing Aerosol Art is an educational campaign presented by acclaimed aerosol artist Chor Boogie to raise awareness about the true cultural roots of aerosol art or “Style Writing” in America, which first evolved in NYC as a form of resistance to oppression and coded communication within marginalized communities of color. Chor Boogie draws on extensive documentation and interviews with his community of personal mentors who were there at the beginning. In this 40-60 minute presentation, Chor explores: The origins of Aerosol art culture & its relationship hip-hop culture - How the narrative of aerosol art has been appropriated - The difference between cultural appropriation & cultural appreciation - The value of diversity in the arts - The benefits of public art and public creative space in communities.
