Exposing the Pentagon: Hidden Polluter of Water
The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) announces “Exposing The Pentagon: Hidden Polluter of Water,” a California-wide speaking tour featuring Pat Elder, investigative reporter with Civilian Exposure. The tour will raise awareness about the military’s use of toxic fire-fighting foams that are leaching carcinogenic PFAS into California’s drinking water supplies and exposing our men and women in uniform, their families living on base, and civilians in the surrounding communities. If you watched the recently released movie “Dark Waters,” you may already be aware of the dangers of PFAS. These “forever chemicals” are toxic in parts per trillion and accumulate in the body. They are linked to a host of health issues including cancer, immune system damage, thyroid disease and high cholesterol. Most alarming, they are detrimental to the developing fetuses of pregnant women. California water agencies have only recently started testing for PFAS and are now shutting down wells after finding unacceptable levels of these chemicals in our drinking water supplies. Many of these wells are adjacent to military installations around the state. See www.militarypoisons.org to learn more about what is in your water and actions you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones.
