A Thousand Sweet Refrains
Sorelle San Diego, a women's chamber chorus, directed by Sally Husch Dean will present A Thousand Sweet Refrains, choral collaboration concert with instrumental ensemble. The concert repertoire includes scintillating selections from Imogen Holst’s cycle “Welcome Joy and Welcome Sorrow” for harp and women’s chorus, Johannes Brahms' "Songs For Women's Chorus, Horns and Harp" and Carlsbad composer, Aaron Alter’s west coast premiere of "Lo Lanu Ha-shem", sung in Hebrew and English. The mood moves between Holst’s setting of Keats’ poetry and the intertwining relationship between Joy and Sorrow, to Brahms' lush but dark themes of weeping, roaring winds, longing, and grief to Alter's lilting dance-like psalm setting with themes of kindness, truth and glory. Featured in all works will be Carlsbad harpist, Naomi Alter, as well as performances by Warren Gref and Doug Hall (horns), Erica Gamble (flute), and Gunnar Biggs (bass). A portion of the ticket proceeds from this concert will support the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship which provides scholarships to international women students to pursue graduate study in the United States and Canada.
