Project [BLANK]: Harawi, a song cycle by Olivier Messiaen
Project [BLANK] returns for its second season. Olivier Messiaen's final song cycle for solo female voice and piano comes to life with performances by mezzo-soprano Leslie Ann Leytham and pianist Brendan Nguyen, and with multimedia projections by Anna Chiaretta Lavateli. Combining symbolist poetry with the Quetcha language, belonging to the indigenous peoples of Peru’s Andes mountains, Messiaen weaves together his lifelong fascination with both Wagner’s love-death in Tristan und Isolde and music from non-western cultures. In this Andean love-song, two relentless lovers eagerly rush to their deaths in the hope they can be together in the next life. A fundraising gala will follow the concert performance. Mark your calendars for an elegant evening of extraordinary music and voice, champagne and culinary delights, and a chance to support San Diego’s very own world-class, interdisciplinary performance art series.
