The Salk Institute & Multiplicity in Architecture
Jeffry Kieffer, who has written and lectured extensively about the architecture of Louis Kahn, presents this special lecture about the buildings of the Salk Institute. The lecture is an exploration of the composition of the Salk Institute master plan, including the built Laboratory building along with the unbuilt Meeting House and Visiting Fellows residences. Kieffer is interested in the “cross-over” spatial and formal relationships among these three components of the complex. The archival drawings for the development of the Institute will be presented to provide the audience with a totally new understanding of the complex. Other Louis Kahn projects done just prior to and ongoing with the Salk commission will be explored in order to shed light on aspects of the Institute’s Laboratory building. Aspects of Kahn’s personal history will also be introduced to illuminate his architecture.
