German Currents: Victoria & Queen of Niendorf
1100 Market Street, San Diego, 92101
Once a yearly occurrence, the German Currents Film Festival has found a more regular home base in the Digital Gym. Alas, I was able to track down videos of this month’s offerings, but not the SRT files that contained the English subtitles. The titular Spaniard in Sebastian Schipper’s Victoria is new to Berlin and about to spend the deadliest night of her life, filmed in long-take. The tagline below the title reads, “One girl. One night. One take.” At 138 minutes, it’s more ambitious than Russian Ark or Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Gimmick or genius? You decide. And this month’s family film is Joya Thome’s Queen of Niendorf, the story of 10-year-old Lea embarking on adventure with a gang of boys half her age.
