Jacquelyne Silver: The Great Composers
1008 Wall Street, San Diego, 92037
Cost: $17 - $22
Each of Jacquelyn Silver’s series of lectures covers two contemporaneous composers. These are composers who forever altered the course of musical history and changed our lives profoundly. Silver will examine musical styles and the way each one heard the magical messages that made them unique. The June 6 lecture, Silver’s last lecture in this series, looks at Gottschalk and Joplin. Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s music has traces of Cajun, mixed with his own prodigious brilliance. Chopin described him as “a talent to watch” after he heard Gottschalk in Paris. The King of Ragtime, Scott Joplin, created an American sound that remains as fresh today as it was in 1899 when he wrote “The Maple Leaf Rag.”
