City Heights Young Writers Workshop
This one-day workshop is designed for young writers of all levels and all interests, ages 11-21. It will provide young people with an insider’s look inside the publishing industry. Highly regarded authors, illustrators and industry professionals will serve as mentors for the day. This workshop was conceived as a way to help raise up diverse voices within the fabric of the book world, which is struggling to overcome proven underrepresentation of minority characters and stories. We hope that by helping ignite the passion for reading and writing in young people of diverse backgrounds, this trend of underrepresentation can be corrected. The workshop is open to youth and young adults from across San Diego County. This year’s event includes panelists Sally Pla (https://sallyjpla.com/) and Kimberly Gee (http://kimberlygee.com/my-books). Pla has won numerous national accolades including the New York Public Library Best Children’s Book award, and Gee, who was born in South Korea, has been creatively producing children’s books and graphic design with publishing powerhouse Simon & Schuster.
