Writing for Children
Together with with Marcie Colleen, we will explore the craft of children’s literature and it’s the various formats, including picture books, chapter books, middle grade or young adult novels. No previous experience is necessary. Absolute beginner writers are welcome. However, students who have previously taken the companion course, Writing for Children, will find this class is a wonderful continuation to strengthen their existing work. You will learn: The different categories of children’s books as well as look closely at what is being published today. Creating effective beginnings and endings. Fine-points of a point of view, in first, second, and third person. The value of an engaging narrator. The art of pacing. How to create effective scenes. Finding the right words. Weaving themes into a story. The various stages of revision.
