Tinker Tuesday: Homemade Bouncy Balls
640 Orange Avenue, Coronado, 92118
Cost: Free
Kids come and experiment with polymers to make homemade bouncy balls. In this science experiment when the glue is added to the borax water mixture the glue becomes firm and bouncy. That’s because a chemical reaction occurs between the borax and the glue causing the molecules in each of the two polymers to crosslink and become even stronger and more elastic in nature and form an elastomer. Since the long polymer chains are flexible, when the ball hits the ground, it can momentarily deform or squish.
