Monster Magnet and Electric Citizen
Named after a Wham-O toy from the sixties, few bands are as steeped in pop culture ephemera as New Jersey-born Monster Magnet, which takes the fever dreams of childhood and adolescence and mashes them into psychedelic Play-Doh. They’ve been making Saturday morning cartoon rock for nearly thirty years now, first hitting most people’s radar in 1995 with a hit single in “Negasonic Teenage Warhead,” which spawned a video that became omnipresent everywhere from USA Network’s Night Flight to MTV and Top of the Pops.
Their 1998 album Powertrip was the one that really made them radio darlings, with anthemic manifestos like the title single, “Space Lord,” “See You In Hell,” and “Temple of Your Dreams” earning them slots on tour with Metallica, Marilyn Manson, and Aerosmith. Nothing they’ve done since has matched their early success, but rather than retiring quietly to highway has-been, they continue to release new albums every few years, the most recent debuting in March, Mindfucker. Singer-guitarist Dave Wyndorf is the only founding member of the band playing Brick by Brick on October 16, though guitarist Phil Caivano was there for some of the heady late 90s Powertrip years, rejoining in 2008. Drummer Bob Pantella has been aboard since 2004, guitarist Garrett Sweeny joined in 2010, and bassist Chris Kosnik became a member in 2013. The bill includes Cincinnati stoners Electric Citizen and New Jersey heavy metal-men Dark Sky Choir.
