HARRIER: The Knight in the Corps' Arsenal of Freedom
George Haloulakos, CFA, educator, museum volunteer and author of “High Flight” will discuss the capabilities, missions and lore of the “Harrier” jump jet. The Harrier is a technical marvel as it is the first truly successful jet Vertical-Short-Takeoff-Landing (VSTOL) aircraft in history.
In addition to the Harrier, visitors to the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum are able to see 30 other historical aircraft up close as well as 8 galleries of artifacts from the earliest days of aviation to present day. Open Cockpit Days are held every other weekend during the summer. Check website for dates.
The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum is aboard Marine Corps Air Station-Miramar. The sentry-free museum entrance is on Miramar Rd., 3.9 miles east of I-805 and 1.3 miles west of I-15. (Look for the Marine Corps and American flags at the entrance.) Open Tues-Sun, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. Free admission and parking.
