Porfirio Gutierrez: Trunk Show & Lecture
Join us for an immersive weekend with master dyer and weaver Porfirio Gutiérrez, and learn about the rich history of the craft in its cultural context.
Recently featured in The New York Times, Gutiérrez is committed to keeping his family’s traditional Zapotec practices and knowledge alive. He and his family are masters of Zapotec weaving and come from a long line of weavers from Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico. They are among a small group of textile artisans working to preserve the use of plant and insect dyes — techniques that stretch back more than 1000 years in the indigenous Zapotec tradition.
For two days, The Collectors’ Gallery will have his gorgeous works for sale (10 am to 5 pm), coinciding with a lecture and natural dye demonstration on Friday, February 2 noon to 1 pm and a weaving demonstration on Saturday, February 3, noon to 3 pm. Trunk Show & Weaving demo: free; Lecture & Dye demo: included with admission.
