California's New "Granny Flat" Laws
San Diego County residents will learn how California has made it easier to add a “granny flat” at the 2017 San Diego County ADU Status Conference. Must register by October 27 at tinyurl.com/SDC-ADU to be allowed into the auditorium.
Until the new legislation, many homeowners were not able to build ADUs due to strict regulations and onerous fees. AARP California and ReVisions Resources have engaged experts to answer questions about the new laws and dispel misconceptions about granny flats, known formally as accessory dwelling units (ADUs). Speakers include California State Senators Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) and Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont), author of landmark reform bill SB1069, as well as Greg Nickless, Housing Policy Analyst, California Department of Housing and Community Development.
Time is allotted for status updates from the County of San Diego and local cities on their progress toward implementing the new ADU laws, followed by a Q&A session. Because ADUs are a promising pathway toward meeting San Diego County's housing and livability goals, the event organizers are inviting a range of stakeholders, including homeowners, local government staff, designers, builders, real estate professionals, and advocates for livability, housing, and seniors.
