SD Fringe Festival: Specific Gravity
A renewed interest in Circus Arts is evident at Fringe this year in more than one offering. Circus Collective's piece is a mixed media presentation of circus art, spoken word poetry, and narrative. It explores the agony of regfugees from around the world. In using many video clips of people being brutally torn from their homes, they attempt to express the feelings of displaced persons in a series of acrobatic dance sequences. Though the performers are all vibrantly fit and extremely competent in their art, these squences rarely seem related to the messages coming from the video screen. Here we have two presentations; a series of clumsy, overlong video scenes, and a fairly pleasant acrobatic concert -- not cohesive, not well developed.
