Parkin: A Citizen Science Lecture
7555 Draper Avenue, San Diego, 92037
Cost: Free
What do your brain and your heart have in common? Is there a link between Parkinson's disease and heart failure? One cause of both neurodegenerative disease and heart disease is the accumulation of “cellular trash." Parkin is a protein that takes out and recycles cellular trash and is one of several genes mutated in patients with Parkinson's disease. Sarah Shires (UCSD) will present her research on how Parkin affects the heart and how it can be targeted as a therapy for heart disease.
