The Great Revolutions, Part I: the Russian Revolution
The 21st Century has been a period of intensifying conflict and spiraling crisis. Faced with unprecedented levels of social inequality, the threat of militarism and war, and a political system that seems impervious to their basic needs and aspirations, workers and young people in the United States and internationally are being radicalized and are looking for a way forward. The political problems of the present, however, are not new. The 20th Century witnessed a series of powerful attempts to reorganize society by revolutionary means. These immensely popular and promising movements were ultimately betrayed and defeated. Yet these experiences contain vital political lessons. As demonstrated by the tragic failure of the 2011 revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, these are lessons we cannot afford to ignore. Join the International Youth and Students for Social Equality for a series of special meetings that will examine some of the most important revolutionary experiences of the 20th Century. In the first meeting Professor Emanuele Saccarelli from the Political Science Department will discuss the Russian Revolution of 1917. In the Aztec Student Union, Visionary Suite.
