Indian Tantric Art
Archaic Indian art meets esoteric Tantric and Yoga tradition during the medieval times, particularly in the Himalayan region of Nepal. This art form is peculiar in its depiction of the human body with various mystical centers and drawing of mandalas and the geometrical designs with various deities carved within, and most importantly, with the depiction of the deities with multiple heads, hands, and seats. With minimal color and space, these images map Tantric cosmology, esoteric physiology, and express a unique philosophy of me and being in the world. In his presentation, Professor Timalsina will introduce the basic modes of Tantric symbolism expressed in mandala art, modes of weaving meaning through artistic expression, and the lived nature of Tantric art in everyday ritual life.
