Heart Healthy Eating In Perspective

9500 Gilman Drive, San Diego, 92093
Cost: Free

The UC San Diego Center for Healthy Aging and the Stein Institute for Research on Aging invite you to the next public lecture: "Heart Healthy Eating In Perspective" by Vicky Newman, MS, RDN, in Garren Auditorium (BSB Building).

At this lecture, you will learn the latest practical dietary suggestions to reduce risk and progression of heart disease, including strategies for reducing inflammation and lowering LDL cholesterol (i.e., the “bad” cholesterol). Ms. Newman, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with years of experience in dietary behavior change research, will talk about the protective compounds found in big color, big flavor plant foods, including dark chocolate and red wine. She will also discuss the benefits of fiber-rich foods, and the special role that soluble fiber plays in controlling cholesterol. Additionally, Ms. Newman will offer perspective on the continuing controversies regarding vegan diets (elimination of all animal foods), egg consumption, and saturated fats like coconut oil. Vicky Newman is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) specializing in an integrated and personalized approach to nutrition, health, and healing. She believes that food not only nourishes the body, but also nurtures the spirit, and is essential for optimal functioning — to be able to live life with exuberance no matter what our age. Ms. Newman has an undergraduate degree from UCLA and a Master of Science degree in Foods and Nutrition (Dietetics) from San Diego State University. As a member of the voluntary faculty at the UC San Diego School of Medicine since 1984, she is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health.
