La Jolla Playhouse DNA New Work Series: Akeelah and the Bee
9500 Gilman Drive, San Diego, 92093
Cost: Free
As part of its series of staged readings of new works, the La Jolla Playhouse, in association with the Children's Theatre Company, presents Cheryl West's adaptation of the film, written and directed by Doug Atchison, about a precocious 11-year-old girl from inner-city Chicago with a gift for words. "When Akeelah advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, her neighborhood unites to witness the courage and inspiration of one amazing little girl." Charles Randolph-Wright directs. The reading takes place in Seuss I Rehearsal Space at UCSD and "is recommended for ages 11 and up."
