Fine Art of Middle Grade and Chapter Books
The Fine Art of Middle Grade and Chapter Books with Melissa Wiley.
The San Diego Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators will feature Melissa Wiley, author of 11 middle-grade books, at its October meeting.
What is a chapter book, and how is it different from middle-grade? How is middle-grade fiction from young adult? Melissa Wiley, who was fortunate enough to work closely with the editor of Random House’s pioneering line of chapter books in the mid-90s (think Magic Tree House and Junie B. Jones), will discuss the unique qualities of the different kinds of books aimed at elementary readers. She will also share strategies for digging up historical details to add color and verisimilitude to books set in far-off times and places and will discuss her favorite technique for making sure prose is sparkling and dialogue lively.
