LIFE at MiraCosta College Lectures
1 pm: “The Challenge of Fragile States” with Ben Oppenheim, Ph. D., Center for Conflict and International Negotiation, Stanford University.
Over the past two decades, foreign and development policy has increasingly focused on the risks posed by fragile states-areas where governing systems are weak or broken. What factors are driving this engagement? What have we learned about the risks posed by fragile states? This talk will present evidence from recent fieldwork in several active and post-conflict areas.
2:30 pm: “Decoding Chilean Politics” with Lois Hecht Oppenheim, Ph. D., American Jewish University Faculty.
Chile’s stable democracy and growing economy today belie its turbulent political and economic histories. This presentation will explore the dramatic shifts in Chilean politics and economics, the nature of Chilean democracy today, and comment on the challenges and moral dilemmas of doing field research under politically fraught circumstances.
