3001 School Lane, Lemon Grove, 91945
Cost: Free
J. Elke Ertle will talk about what it was like to grow up on a tiny capitalist island in the middle of a vast communist sea.
Ertle was born and raised in West Berlin, Germany, during the Cold War. When she was 2-1/2, the Russians cut off all ground access to her part of the city. Starvation seemed imminent. The United States and Great Britain responded by airlifting all necessities. Over the next decade, tension continued to mount, culminating in the construction of the Berlin Wall, separating families and friends.
November 9 of this year will mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Walled-In will provide the base for a timely discussion.
