We'll consider such questions as: What makes a beginning fly? What obligations attend to a beginning? How might a writer manage information in ways that pay off later in the story? What is the relationship between the story's beginning and its ending? The beginning and the middle? The beginning and the speaker? What kinds of opening gambits are available to the writer besides good old in medias res?
We'll look at lots of story beginnings and then we'll write some of our own and share and workshop them.
