Steel Magnolias
Steel Magnolias follows the detailed and diverse stories of a tight-knit group of unique women connected through a Louisiana beauty salon. Shelby, a frequent client of shop owner Truvy, is young, thoroughly in love, and diabetic. In the midst of planning her wedding with her headstrong mother M'Lynn, and M’Lynn’s colorful friends, she becomes surprisingly pregnant. But despite such a pregnancy potentially proving fatal for someone with her condition, Shelby claims she’d rather have “thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.” As the future of Shelby and her child remain precariously in the balance, attitudes towards love, apathy, pain, loss, secrecy, and a desperate attempt at happiness emerge. From a cast of dynamic southern women, ranging not only in age, but also perspective, dreams are built and burnt, while the strength of love between both true friends and a mother and child is continuously tried.
Thoroughly moving, Steel Magnolias makes for a powerful Theater for a Cause production, an annual tradition at San Dieguito Academy in which all proceeds go to a related charity. This year, all donations and proceeds earned from Steel Magnolias will go to the American Diabetes Association.
