Over the next two decades, our ability to integrate advanced research from our universities directly into the industrial supply chain - particularly in energy and high-tech manufacturing can become our greatest differentiator,” he claims.

Complex systems rarely succeed when their individual parts evolve independently, he believes, adding that competitive regions, like competitive companies, require alignment. But the next step is moving from coordination to integration, and we already do a better job than most. We are further along this journey than many other states, but the finish line is a moving target,” he says.

Asked where he sees South Carolina two decades from now if it succeeds in fully realising its potential, Molinaroli avoids making precise predictions, but he does describe a direction. “I can’t predict the future, but success in twenty years looks like a South Carolina that is the undisputed hub for the ‘industrial internet of things’, advanced manufacturing and energy systems.”
