The fitness community has always sought gyms that mirror their own relentless pursuit of progress. They’re pushing towards their goals, and they want to do that in an environment that inspires them every step of the way. As more people commit to that journey, 24 Hour Fitness is completely revamping locations nationwide to match that energy, including right here in San Diego at the Imperial Marketplace location.
Unveiled this weekend, May 17, in San Diego, California, the redesigned club marks more than just a cosmetic upgrade. It’s a reimagining of how a gym should function with member-centric design at the fore. New equipment like the popular glute drive machine, additional options for high-traffic machines, expanded training floor, and a larger turf zone all allow for more time training or working with coaches and less time waiting for space to free up.
“The Imperial Marketplace community deserves a gym that inspires and empowers them every time they walk through the doors,” said Darren Bluffin, District Manager at 24 Hour Fitness. “Our refresh of this club represents our ongoing investment in the fitness journey of our members. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to push your limits, this is a space built to help you succeed.”
The new space is open, fluid, and intentional. A restructured layout offers better flow, wider sightlines, and room to breathe. Strength and cardio equipment is brand-new. Functional fitness gets prime real estate with a dramatically expanded turf training zone—ideal for sled pushes, battle ropes, and HIIT circuits.
But the real standout is Recovery24, a newly added space entirely dedicated to post-workout recovery, flexibility, and mobility. Outfitted with foam rollers, stretching zones, and guided cooldown tools like Hyperice massage guns and Human Touch massage chairs, this offering represents a shift in how fitness brands are approaching overall wellness.
“Recovery is an active part of any workout,” Bluffin says. “It’s how you gain strength, mobility, and cardiovascular fitness after you stress the body with a hard workout, and we want to encourage our members to find that balance as they train.”
To celebrate the reopening, 24 Hour Fitness threw a launch event that doubled as a neighborhood party. There were raffles for signed gear, live community workouts, and even a surprise appearance from Trinity Byars, San Diego Wave FC player, who posed for photos and gave fans a reason to smile between reps.
The event reflects a larger mission for the brand, one centered on celebrating the local community as much as being a place to hit fitness goals.
As the definition of wellness evolves, so too does the fitness industry. In a post-pandemic world where hybrid schedules, mental health awareness, and self-care are reshaping daily routines, gyms like 24 Hour Fitness at Imperial Marketplace are stepping up their game to meet the moment.
With more than 40 years in the industry, 24 Hour Fitness is betting big on these kinds of localized reinventions, on spaces that approach fitness from a comprehensive point of view, that puts people at the center of design, and that functionality with inspiration. Imperial Marketplace is one of over 45 planned gym refreshes nationwide, representing a massive, multiyear investment for the fitness chain.
“Today’s member is looking for something different,” Bluffin says. “They want to feel better, move better, and live better, but that’s hard enough on its own. Our members need an amazing space in which to do that work.”
The Imperial Marketplace revamp is part of a broader refresh strategy by 24 Hour Fitness, one that puts member experience at the center of club design. Expect to see more gyms follow suit as they prioritize recovery spaces, multi-functional zones, and community-driven events as standard features, not luxuries.
In the meantime, if you’re near Imperial Marketplace, the best time to start getting in shape was yesterday. The next best time is today.
