The Useless Idols were formed in 2005 by Ben Hood (guitar, vocals) and Matt Rogers. In early 2008, brothers Noah Babcock (guitar) and Jonah Babcock (drums) joined the group.

Hood lists his influences as Joe Strummer, Tim Armstrong, Frank Iero, and Garth Brooks. Noah Babcock likes metal, the Replacements, and Black Flag, while bassist Matt Rogers draws inspiration from Paul McCartney and Matt Freedman.
