Based in El Cajon and co-founded by former Virginian Johnny Kmak, Johnny and the Goiters were dedicated to becoming the worst beer bar band ever, a pursuit that some say was successful.

Johnny Kmak has been living in San Diego since his teens, attending Grossmont High and Grossmont College. Johnny and the Goiters’ full-length Cereal Thriller sports a cover featuring Tim Curry dressed as Pennywise the Clown from Stephen King’s It. Johnny Kmak’s brother Joel co-founded the Penetrators, as well as playing with the Hitmakers, the Crawdaddys, the Beat Farmers, and more, while Jef Kmak has played with Joey Harris and the Speedsters and many others.

Johnny Kmak’s son Josh has a band called Nformals.
