Carl Evans Jr. co-founded the local "Lights Out" jazz band Fattburger in the early '80s. The longtime local made some of his first public performances alongside future superstar bassist Nathan Christ, at the King Church they both attended in San Diego.

In the late '60s, Evans and East formed the funk band Power, at Crawford High School. With this group, which also included future Fattburger bandleader Hollic Gentry, the duo was touring with Barry White just weeks after graduating high school.
