i'm a humorist and a poet..i've been aware for a very long time poetry is unwanted on the READER...now it seems HUMOR is unwanted as well

so i will be leaving the Reader..and will miss it very much

thx to all that welcomed me here...friends made and treasured...may all of u find and live ur dreams...as another writer here would say..best Nan

When they turn the pages of history

When these days have passed long ago

Will they read of us with sadness

For the seeds that we let grow?

We turned our gaze

From the castles in the distance

Eyes cast down

On the path of least resistance

Cities full of hatred, fear and lies

Withered hearts and cruel, tormented eyes

Scheming demons dressed in kingly guise

Beating down the multitude and

Scoffing at the wise

The hypocrites are slandering

The sacred halls of Truth

Ancient nobles showering

Their bitterness on youth

Can't we find the minds that made us strong?

Can't we learn to feel what's right

And what's wrong?

What's wrong?

Cities full of hatred, fear and lies

Withered hearts and cruel, tormented eyes

Scheming demons dressed in kingly guise

Beating down the multitude and

Scoffing at the wise

Can't we raise our eyes and make a start?

Can't we find the minds to lead us

Closer to the Heart?

you see i have a favorite blogger here...an elderly gent of great understanding and a plethora of knowledge of politics (federal..state and county) as he's been a journalist of some note for a very long time

no i'm not telling u how long!!!

suffice it to say he like me is in someways "older then dirt"

here's my dilemma...i know little about politics in spite of my advancing age and intelligence...and when i visit this fellas blog i often go completely off subject

i kid with him...flirt brazenly with him (altho i completely respect his long term happy marriage)...i post a poem in his comments if the subject matter seems appropriate...we discuss and sing POOH songs together...and i offer to buy products he has stocks in to keep them from falling in the stock market...hahahahaha

i just generally play with this more then lovely man

i have e-mailed him thru the reader to ask if my shenanigans r tiring to him and he has said "no they aren't"

i have also told him that any time he sees fit he should delete my comment...and in print he has resoundingly said he won't

but now i'm wondering...not just about commenting to this gentleman ...but to many i comment to...because i'm kinda a court jester around here...even if u can't see my funny pointy hat or hear the bells ringing

i'm kinda feeling that people like me might be banished from the READER Kingdom

maybe a READER blogger shouldn't be comic relief

Nan, I may be following you out the door.

Reader admin has lost it. Seriously.

I am told they pulled a thread that referenced "incest." Yet they allow another thread to stay that references bestiality, satanism, physical and sexual abuse -- and that blog post, if the past is any indication, will probably win the blog contest this month.

Why is all this happening? The writing is on the wall, and it ain't pretty.

If some had not been allowed to exceed the Terms of Use from their first violations, we would not be at this juncture. I hope that no one leaves because the community needs all of its members.

0

Grasca July 6, 2010 @ 9:42 p.m.

If staff needs some extra work, I would review the recently posted story which references abuse, loss of virginity and other questionable matters. It is offensive on many levels to some readers and of questionable taste in my opinion.

0

CuddleFish July 7, 2010 @ 4:09 a.m.

I wrote this comment on another thread, but apparently it was removed, so will repeat my question.

My understanding is a thread of MsG's was removed, supposedly because it jokingly mentioned incest -- Interesting that a certain writer here made jokes about incest that never bothered the Reader.

Further, as Grasca has said, there is currently a thread on the forum that references bestiality, satanism, physical and sexual abuse, among other offensive topics, and that thread has been allowed to stand.

I doubt that the thread that was pulled was pulled for the reason given. But if it is true, then there appears to be a double standard. Intolerable, really.

Sad to see you go, Nan!

Just goes to prove that ANY form of warfare (especially e-mail flame wars) never prove who is right--only who is left to pick up the pieces.

What scares me the most is that I will log onto this site, and find our blog page has been permanently deleted by order of the Reader.

I care for you folks, since you are my cyberspace buddies. However, to quote a punchline from a WWII poster: "WATCH WHAT YOU WRITE!"

As for me, I'm staying on this blogsite until they shut it down!

Go in peace, nan...perhaps one day, we may see you again!

deleting all the bloggers would be a shame Robbiebear...i haven't been here to long but i've for the most part enjoyed the experience

i've recently begun to realize how the READER blog is an avenue for budding writers...that in itself makes it a worthy endeavorer and we should all be applauding the READER for that

there's a wide variety of writers here...some very good...i went to Quills today and read his blog "the most beautiful squirrel" and have rarely read anything more on target to the subject in a truly heartfelt and gentle way

http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/quillpena/2010/jul/06/the-most-beautiful-squirrel-in-the-world-5/#c65929

0

CuddleFish July 7, 2010 @ 5:51 p.m.

Sure, russl. So, I ask again: If the thread that mentioned incest was pulled, why wasn't this thread pulled?

Nan, we are very lucky indeed, blessed I would call it, to be part of such a brilliant community of writers. Yourself, AG, Daniels, MsG, RobbieBear, Joe, and others -- and others who I wouldn't call bad writers, just beginners making all the mistakes beginning writers do.

I miss many of the writers who have left, in particular, Pike and Adam (miss Stella like crazy -- her and Dr. Peanut are the bomb when it comes to writing about the human psyche.). It's great to be able to come to this site every day and know someone is going to be posting something new and fresh and interesting.

:)

0

nan shartel July 7, 2010 @ 9:17 p.m.

we still have Refried who is just terrific as a fact finder and a south of the border blogger altho i wouldn't allocate Mexico as his only forte..

there r one or two writer who write in Mexican and English..i don't recall their name but i've read a few wonderful translated blogs

I don't get the humor mentioned by another blogger who lost her virginity to a pork product. Hormel might sue. This should be examined. What is funny "acceptable" about the stand up 5150 comic that was not funny "acceptable" about the Admin pulled post ? I am not seeing a difference. Please explain. Pentagrams of female monthly blood also seem to be in very questionable taste in the same "acceptable" humor post.

0

Russ Lewis July 8, 2010 @ 11:21 p.m.

That comedian wasn't harassing anybody, as far as I know.

0

SurfPuppy619 July 8, 2010 @ 11:33 p.m.

Alleging incestuous relationships in print is dangerous business, even in jest. Newspapers have no sense of humor when it comes to this sort of thing. Airport security screeners don't get it either when people joke about bombs. Nothing was pulled because anyone used humor.

Russl, without realizing it, you just posted the one line that got that thread pulled.

ADMIN!! Please pull Russl's comment. I've offended myself!!

0

CuddleFish July 9, 2010 @ 8:21 a.m.

snort snicker snort

Did russl actually call the Reader "a newspaper?"

And here I thought they had no sense of humour about themselves.

Okay, back to the subject at hand.

When Josh Board wrote that joke about incest in his blog post, I complained about it, openly, on the attached thread. It wasn't funny. Know why it wasn't funny? Because it was about a real live person suffering in a real life situation.

Without seeing the entire context of the piece, MsG's comment is laugh-out loud funny because clearly she is not referencing anything that actually happened, she is MAKING STUFF UP to exaggerate the extent of the narrator's hotness. To say she is harassing or abusing or parodying anyone is simply ridiculous, at least I know of no bloggers who write about incestuous relationships with their brothers in that style of writing here or anywhere.

Board's comments were not pulled until the day he involuntarily departed. MsG's bit of brilliant fictional humour was yanked the minute it hit the page. And as she has correctly pointed out, there is a thread on here whose content is vulgar, coarse, twisted, yet there it stays, waiting to take the July Neighborhood Blog award.

The differences are so obvious, they hardly need explaining. Sorry, but this whole thing reeks of lost moorings.

0

Grasca July 9, 2010 @ 8:38 a.m.

Snorting could be judged offensive in a auditory sense for those who abstain from meat products. Sillier things have been removed for cause while other more offensive posts remain. It is all in the literary/legal taste buds of those who can delete.

0

CuddleFish July 9, 2010 @ 9:02 a.m.

Grasca, apparently these people couldn't tell the difference between child porn and Lolita. And they can't distinguish between what is legally defensible and what isn't. Clumsy, ham-handed, and that's if you accept their explanation on its face. Hate to think there's something else going on here, but the evidence certainly seems to suggest a [not so] hidden agenda.

nan shartel July 9, 2010 @ 11:14 a.m.

thx for the song by Eva Cuddles

and thx for all the comments here...some are brash..argumentative...scornful but there's no name calling...this is what comment areas are for

it makes me proud i have a comment area where this can happen...and i ask Admin right now not to remove any comment and in the future not to remove any comments to any of my blogs without MY permission

only i have the right to remove comments!!!

unless they are slanderous..pornographic...or prejudicial in any way

now to the topic that's being discussed now...the deletion of blogs for cause

recently i had a blog deleted...it was a poem that altho the wording wasn't offensive... the content...including the picture that some of the poem was written in was clearly sexual in nature...it was a beautiful sensual poem...deeply intimate...and ecstatic in content

~~u know..the kind that make ur breath catch in ur throat and u never want to leave that moment and breathe again~~

human doings focused in rare air

the READER pulled it

I wasn't offended

for some it would have been too much

for those who have that "all sex is dirty" or 2 private to ever see the light of day

poetry has alway dived into pools of human experiences sometimes off limits to others

i didn't get a chance to read Granties piece...just as no one got to read my what my have been considered "over the top" poem so i can't speak to it

i can say this much..MsG hasn't never to my knowledge written an unseemly blog...so i would bet the one pulled wasn't either

i have some thoughts about "hidden agendas" where the awarding of blogger of the month prizes go...but they r speculation at this point...theories yet to be proven

for the first time i did not rush to congratulate the winners as i do every month...that in itself say something about what i think

Before I Became a Mental Patient, I Was a Stand-up Comedian

this blog was crude..sick...and made fun of women in a way that was beyond my sensibilities...it was a definate HBO piece...and i'm not a paying customer here for that kind of fare....

but as it still stands readable here i guess i'll never have to worry about MY COMIC RELIEF comments!!!

0

Grasca July 9, 2010 @ 12:38 p.m.

With the blogisphere spinning out of control at this site, I am having difficulty keeping up with the removed posts, redirected posts, and all that jazz. While I agree that some content can be viewed from a reader's perspective, other content is just plain nasty whether a mental patient writes it or not. I would like to see the editorial standards printed for what is "acceptable" humor and what is not. Referencing a woman's monthly blood flow and connecting it to a pentagram is weird, repulsive, and offensive to me. But this blog remains in all of its questionable glory. Since a meat product was mentioned, should the blog be thrown into the recipe section ? Or entertainment ? Or maybe just removed ? I just ate a Twinkie so I have legal defense for what I wrote.

0

The standards are changing so fast, and not for the better, a2z, that it's impossible to keep up.

Four threads pulled in two days, not one of them offensive, NOT ONE. Yet threads are allowed to stand that are truly questionable in terms of content and despite numerous complaints.

Again, one doesn't want to suspect a hidden agenda. But ...

RE Blogging definition or lack of one:

I don't necessarily follow all or any of these tips mentioned in the link below, but if people are interested in anything I've blogged about at the Reader, then I blame the journalism teachings of Andrew Makarushka, back when he was our adviser at the CITY TIMES of San Diego City College in the last millennium.

i've blogs for 11 years now at about 8 blogging sites and i dont think this guy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7RPCF... has a clue on blogging a2zresource

blogging is strictly personal...not for the masses at all...except in the comments if the blogger chose to enter into the comments

i have alway spoken up to every comment...but my blogs???

they're strictly for my own entertainment and i choose the content to begin with..if others enjoy it as well all the better

0

Russ Lewis July 9, 2010 @ 3:21 p.m.

Absolutely, Nan. A blog is a diary, for one's own growth, and if someone else benefits from it, that's a bonus. And it's surprising how they sometimes do.

russl, did you really have to drag that old thread out of the dead zone? My Lord, I'd rather read MsG's pulled thread, or mine, or my Adam Lambert thread -- hint, hint -- than go over that old thing again.

0

Reader Staff July 10, 2010 @ 9:49 a.m.

Re: #41 and #62

It's pretty simple, CuddleFish. As was previously explained to you via email:

Recipes belong in the recipe section. Event content belongs in the event section. Blogs belong in the blog section.

We have always organized content this way. This is nothing new. There is no hidden agenda.

All content posted by a particular person (whether a comment, a blog, a recipe, etc...) can be found on that person's profile page, accessed by by clicking on their name.

0

CuddleFish July 10, 2010 @ 10:31 a.m.

I wasn't looking, russl, nan was, she may be interested in pursuing what I write all over the site, I doubt if too many others are.

Admin, those of us who blog on the Neighborhood blogs have been allowed to add pretty much whatever content we choose -- it has been within our discretion to start topics we think are of general interest to readers.

I had a thread posted here, Simple Food, which spoke of cooking, and which a number of people added recipes to in the comment section. Simple Standards was a follow-up on that thread. I added a recipe into the content of the post to give an example of what I was writing about, and solicited more recipes such as the ones posted in the Simple Foods thread.

The other one, about Adam Lambert, I had posted a thread about Adam Lambert before, it was not removed. Again, this flimsy excuse that I mentioned him coming to San Diego, well really, that was my excuse for posting a thread about Adam when in actuality I only wanted to post the video.

The third blog post pulled, On Winning the Reader Blog Contest, let's be honest. It wasn't abusive or harassing. Anyway, I already responded to that in my followup thread, General Announcement. :)

the same 2 blogs come up...nothing else

if i put Memorial Life into the search engine at the top and search blogs i get a random group of blogs some written by Cuddles some blogs she's left comments in and i have no idea if all her writing is represent there

it's all very confusing...and sad in a way as Cuddles has written some very nice stuff and it would be nearly impossible to find them with this system

i intend no personal criticism here...this is a just "making the READER aware" comment

i could be speaking of many writers here...not just Cuddles...i'm quite fortunate...all of my blogs r listed

i wonder if this lifting and moving peoples blogs to suit ur criteria has something to do with it

there r writers here i love to reread and in cases like Cuddles i can't

I've got a lot to say about the Reader and its place in San Diego, and a lot more about the purpose of blogging, but I'll take it elsewhere.

Hey, I missed an EVA CASSIDY discussion? Ya'll DO know that she's my #1 idol? The best, bar none. I even worked with a couple of guitarists on an "Eva Cassidy Tribute" sorta thingy, back 3-4 years ago. Neither worked out, due to personal drama that had nothing to do with music. We were working on "Autumn Leaves," "Woodstock," and "Fields of Gold."

Here she is, on Autumn Leaves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSXYu-3r1S8&a=ISh47UAQPVA&playnext_from=ML&playnext=2

In fact, here's my YouTube channel, with my own Eva video right at the top: http://www.youtube.com/user/antigeekess

(It's a little hard to make a vid on someone who has very few public pictures in existence. I did the best I could at the time.)

Wow. Almost 22,000 views. Hadn't checked in a while. Wow! Something new! When my vid stopped playing on its own page... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arCs2L...

...another Eva vid started, in an automatic "Eva Cassidy Mix!" That's COOL! Usually YouTube's changes annoy me, but this is really groovy. :)

Next in the Eva mix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFFo1pu4q7Q&a=ISh47UAQPVA&playnext_from=ML&playnext=1

All ya ever need to know about singing. Riiiiiight there in that lady. I'll stop now.

AG, I had never heard of Eva Cassidy, when a fellow on another forum introduced me to her. I can't say I like her interpretation of every song -- he kept insisting I go back and listen to Autumn Leaves, and no, it doesn't rate with me.

BUT: I say this in all seriousness, there is no better song, and no better interpretation of a song, ever, than Eva Cassidy singing Fields of Gold. [And I've heard Clay Aiken singing it! ;)]
