Phil’s Big BBQ at the Ballpark

Tailgate Park, East Village

Phil’s BBQ and Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County come together to take in a Padres game to benefit the military mentoring program, Operation Bigs. The tailgate party features a Karl Strauss beer garden, music, and Kid Ventures Kid Zone. Guests can enjoy Phil’s chicken and ribs plus two sides, a beverage, an ice cream dessert from Ben and Jerry’s, and a ticket to the 7:05 p.m. Padres vs. Phillies game.

San Diego Sausage Fest

LOUNGEsix, Downtown San Diego

Ten of the city's meat masters will attempt to cut the competition for rights to the best sausage in town. Chefs will enter their favorite sausage recipes, from chorizo to bratwurst, to present to the public for a winning vote. Also featuring Lost Abbey "The Road to Helles" brew, and live entertainment by The Tighten Ups.

International Surfing Day

Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows, University Heights

The Surfrider Foundation San Diego County Chapter hosts an International Surfing Day celebration. The event features a poolside paddle-in movie screening of Gidget. Bring your own board and watch the movie from the pool or hang out poolside. A DJ will play classic beach/surf music before and after the film. The suggested donation at the door includes entrance to the event, appetizers, and popcorn. Drinks will be available for purchase.

7 p.m. to 10 p.m., June 21

Ambiguous Background

Brokers Building Gallery, Downtown San Diego

A mix of assemblage, photography, painting, mixed media, and live music. Food and drink will be served. Featuring special guest artists Dan Camp, Beto Soto, Dina Bedenko, Franky Agostino, Anemice, Eva Coleman, and Jaime Lyerly. Participating Brokers artists include John Noel, Hans Chobolits, Madeline Sherry, Stefanie Bales, Stacy D'Aguiar, Theo, Carl Schmidt, Scott Gengelbach, Joan Mathison, Helena Espinoza, Cheryl Winkfield. Show runs through July 24.

Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-off Festival

4800-5000 blocks of Newport Avenue along the waterfront

Festival nosh, art, beachfront entertainment, outdoor laser tag, and more. The chili competition will feature more than two dozen tastings from amateur entrants competing for the titles of Hottest Chili, Judges’ Award, and grand prize People’s Choice Award. Festival highlights include: five stages of continuous live music, artists’ alley, community mural art project, beachside beer garden and spirits. One unique piece at this year’s Street Fair will be the debut of an original song from Billy Lee & The Swamp Critters, a Gulf Coast band with Cajun and Zydeco roots, written as homage to the old Wonderland Amusement Park and its significance for San Diego. (The piece will be a waltz, in honor of the Wonderland era, with a modern twist.)

Rhythm and Vine Festival

Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier, Downtown San Diego

A one-day music, wine, and food festival that offers award-winning wines from more than 30 wine and spirit purveyors, as well as samplings from over 30 restaurant and gourmet food companies. The fifth annual event will be hosted by chef Brian Malarkey, features a silent auction, and will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego.
