Caging Elephants and Catching Trains

I was super swamped over the weekend. And this caused me to miss an opera some college kids were putting on at Point Loma Nazarene. I’m not much of an opera fan, but one of the kids wanted a write-up and I told them I’d see what I could do. At the very least, I meant to attend their event and couldn’t.

I also wanted to see Cage the Elephant (No Rest For the Wicked). I missed their set at Street Scene this year, and I love the EP of theirs I bought.

There was an elephant I didn’t miss. It was the story about one, out of Oklahoma.

A couple was driving home from church and sideswiped the thing. The 68-year-old driver said he didn’t see it because it blended in with the road.

Yeah. It’s tough missing an elephant, which escaped from a nearby circus.

The elephant suffered some scrapes, as did the mans SUV.

Another accident, over in Fullerton, involved a father and son that were killed when they were hit by a train.

Wanna guess what they were doing?

Well, what do you think they were doing? They were train watching.

Now, I’ve heard of bird watching. And I always thought it sounded boring to grab a pair of binoculars, hoping to see some red bow firetail finch perched up high in an oak tree.

The 56-year-old dad wasn’t with a 10-year-old. Nope. This was a 23-year-old son, so it’s really hard to have sympathy, when a 7,000 foot long freight train barreled into them.

The engineer blew the train whistle to warn them, but couldn’t stop in time.

I’m guessing the mans last words were “Hey…I see one!”
