Sports Shorts -- LT and high school violations

A few of the local sports stations (the ones that haven't fired their hosts, anyway), are talking about how the Chargers are handling the LaDanian Tomlinson situation. It's a good topic, but really, if you're a Chargers fan, you're kind of an idiot. Not for the reasons one of our posters here would say. But because...they always do things wrong. Always.

They had Michael Turner, who was the best running back in football this year. He was here in town for years. And, when he played, he looked awesome. But did the Chargers play him? Nope. They let LT get banged up, even when they had a lead that was safe.

And, they let him go because they couldn't afford him. They've been doing this kind of thing for ages.

And whatever happens with LT will be a PR nightmare for the team. If they sign him, and he gets that $8 million, when he's clearly not even a Top 10 running back in the league anymore, that will hurt the teams salary cap.

If they let him go, the fans will wonder why the best running back in Chargers history (and a future Hall of Famer), was just let go.

To me, a much more interesting story was in the Union-Tribune sports pages for a few days.

San Diego High had three college basketball prospects caught in a legal battle that included allegations of living arrangements and secret cash payments to a player's mother.

I remember LeBron James got a Hummer when he was in high school. The funny thing was...the car dealership gave it to him, assuming he'd become an NBA player. And, since it didn't involve college sports, that was legal. Bizarre, but legal.

Local running back Reggie Bush, now with the Saints and more famous for dating big bootied Kim Kardashian, got into trouble for getting a house for his parents.

Man...I bet a lot of parents wished they signed their kids up for football instead of piano lessons, huh?

It's so strange that this stuff still goes on. It seems like it would be easy enough to catch these guys. And the NCAA should just have a strict rule. Something that states if a college is caught doing this, they are banned for three years. That would make the risk not worth attempting.

I went out on a few dates years ago, with a woman that played college basketball at Stanford. She was friends with Janet Elway, who is Hall of Fame QB John Elways wife. She swam at Stanford, and John was the QB. They would all go out to dinner, and Elway would pick up the check. She'd ask why he always had money and he said, "After the games, when I'm getting dressed in the locker room....my clothes pockets are all stuffed with money. I don't know where it comes from, but I don't ask any questions."

I remember when I was around 13, reading a story in Inside Sports, about Herschel Walker. He was being so highly recruited, that some colleges were camping outside his house, just to make sure no other college was doing anything illegal.

And when it was all said and done, and Walker became a pro football player (I believe in the USFL), he said he did get a car and $30,000. Although, I'm not exactly sure I'm even remembering that story right. I just remember being blown away that he got anything, when so many colleges were watching to see what the other schools would do.
