Today's entry: older actors who could have played an older version of Guy Pearce's Peter Weyland character more convincingly - and more movingly - than Guy Pearce in old-man makeup:
Seriously, Prometheus people. I get that it wasn't just about the fake TED talk you used in Prometheus's publicity campaign. I get that young Peter Weyland actually appeared in one scene of the film - a scene that eventually wound up on the cutting room floor. So you needed the look to be consistent. But even so, Von Sydow would have been something close to perfect:
[Spoilers!] If Dr. Shaw's search for our origins was the film's ambitious head, then Weyland's search for a way to beat death was its sympathetic heart. You needed those scenes to resonate - yes, Weyland is a loathsome solipsist, but doesn't everyone want to stay alive? Instead, we all sat around thinking, "Wow, Guy Pearce looks creepy in old man makeup."
