How Darbeau's hide was nailed

U-T San Diego's claim that a computer glitch caused Mitt Romney to submit late payments not supported by City documents
Dorian, thanks for the correction on the lateness of the bill. You should also correct your false assertion that the U-T claimed "that a computer glitch caused Mitt Romney to submit late payments." We claimed no such thing. We simply reported that he received one of the late bills that we wrote about in March. His building permit representative said that the Romneys spent some time reviewing the bill, given how late it was in coming. That was his response, not our "claim." We routinely contact the people we are writing about, to give them a chance to explain what happened. You have suggested, on Twitter, that we shouldn't do that. I have to say that's not a fair approach. As another example, you didn't contact the U-T before writing this item about us -- with the U-T mentioned in the headline. That is not a fair approach. Should you ever have a question about a Watchdog story, please don't hesitate to contact me at ricky.young @ utsandiego.com.— October 24, 2012 12:29 p.m.
Mitt Romney lags on paying La Jolla beach house building fees to city
This sentence in your posting here is fabricated: "It wasn't a glitch said Sokolowski." In fact, this was her response: "As you know, statements were not sent from the City's Comptroller's office for awhile." Not only did she *not* say "it wasn't a glitch," she in fact confirmed that it *was* a glitch. As the U-T has reported, the reason the bills did not go out "for a while" (it was actually nine months) was complications with the computer system transition. You can read about that here: http://bit.ly/HkxGSP— October 24, 2012 12:22 p.m.
"G-U-I-L-T-Y": Filner camp accuses DeMaio of secret meetings with U-T brass on Facebook
Dorian, I appreciate that you found my comments newsworthy. I would just clarify one thing: I made my remarks to Tom *in addition* to publishing stories in the U-T, not instead of.— October 6, 2012 4:43 p.m.
