Michell Told She Can't Lobby City for a Year
C'mon Don Do you really think that there isn't an easy way to get around this one-year prohibition? These people are mingling among themselves all the time and can certainly find ways to get their views to whomever they want. And besides, what's the difference whether Mitchell personally lobbies the Council (or anyone else) or whether one of her minions, prepped by the boss, does the actual "lobbying" Or for that matter, anyone of the corporate welfare fat cats who make up the organization's membership?— December 17, 2010 6:07 p.m.
Believe the Grand Jury. Do NOT Believe the Mayor's Office
Don Do you think either Goldsmith or Mayor S knows the meaning of "contumelious?" And if they don't, would they not be too contumacious to admit it?— November 19, 2010 9:18 a.m.
Boycott U-T, Says Arts Writer
Don As someone still reading the UT, albeit in less and less time by the week, the arts problem is compounded by the fact that most of these arts community people can neither write cogently nor pitch their comments to readers not already steeped in arts lingo. The in-house nature of the pieces stands in stark contrast to the rest of the paper, especially in the news sections, where every effort is made to dumb down descriptions to the point where denizens of the San Diego Zoo are probably feeling pandered to!!— November 8, 2010 7:57 a.m.
DeMaio Blind to One Thing: Greed
Don Do you know who contributes to DeMaio's campaign fund--or whatever he calls his pot of dough? He obviously doesn't do all of this on his council member salary. Are the contributions corporate? Or from out-of-state ideological groups? I seem to recall that he got funding from the Club for Growth (sic?) the right-wing group out of Washington DC. My problem with DeMaio is the lack of transparency in his persona, unless of course it's all about positioning himself as Mayor or higher which brings cynicism to the fore. Compared with Aguirre, DeMaio comes across as a mean fellow with a heart of stone. I'd put my money on Aguirre any day as someone who actually has the best interests of San Diego at heart, as opposed to his own interests. No one could have traveled down as many quixotic roads as Aguirre without actually caring for people.— November 5, 2010 9:18 p.m.
Fox Blasts Prop. 24, Doesn't Reveal Big Donation to Defeat It
So Don, Your "shock" at Fox reminds me of Casablanca's Louie finding out that Rick's featured gambling. Not in any way to condone such sleazy journalism, but it's gone on for ages, and without any assist from the Supreme Court. What's the difference between Fox pimping for one side and the UT, which sent out reporters for years to boost politicians whom Jim Copley showered with money (and UT staff at times)?! Or sports columnists touting new stadiums while Herb Klein chaired sports committees? At least today there's sufficient alternative media to point out these slanted coverages, even if the majority of voters aren't paying any more attention than they did a generation ago.— November 2, 2010 8:54 a.m.
Spanos Really Wants L.A., Says Yahoo! Sports
Hey Don Slightly different topic but in the realm of media. Check out the Wednesday New York Times Food/Dining section on the US government's case against the French Gourmet restaurant in Pacific Beach. All the rock-ribbed conservative types who rail against illegal immigration suddenly face a dilemma when one of their favorites is caught hiring illegal immigrants brazenly. Also, none of this has been in the UT except for a brief article when the first indictment came down. Probably because The French Gourmet catered some shindigs at the Copley spread in La Jolla?! http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/08/dining/08crackd…— September 7, 2010 7:29 p.m.
Spanos Really Wants L.A., Says Yahoo! Sports
Don I hope you're right that these SOBs can't raise enough money in the short-term to entice the fools in the San Diego governing councils for going ahead with another scam on the public. While I enjoy watching the Chargers, I wouldn't pay a nickel to keep them from going to LA and I suspect an increasing number of San Diegans would agree with me. Unfortunately, if this ever comes to a vote, the powers-that-be will figure out how to include the whole county population in the vote in order to dilute the influence of San Diego city residents who would suffer the brunt of the financial pain. Meanwhile, your former employer, the U-T, merrily goes about pumping for the Spanos in every one of its sections. And oh yeah, it quietly hiked the price of the M-Sat issue to a buck beginning yesterday, Labor Day. Guess they've got to pay for all that high-priced designer talent imported from Orange County. Yechh.— September 7, 2010 2:49 p.m.
Bridgepoint Brass Dumping Stock
What will happen to all the Bridgepoint signs on buildings all over town??— August 13, 2010 4:09 p.m.
Hmmm. Lucchino Lauds Private Ballpark Financing
Don I would hope you would submit your post to the Journal as a letter to the editor. Nice that the holier-than-thou conservatives there would know all the facts. And be sure to see the propaganda piece masquerading as journalism on the front page of the U-T this morning regarding the "great deal" that publicly-subsidized ballparks are! How Lobbyist Tried to Sway Pat Kruer
So why isn't this story in the U-T today? At least I didn't see it on the web site.— July 9, 2010 11:26 a.m.
