Local martial arts class, 1971. Karate schools multiplied in the 1970s, but in the mid '60s the discipline began getting attention from our local daily. In 1965, it was noted that 11 martial artists wore a black belt in San Diego County; about 100 students attended four karate schools. At UCSD, "only skin diving among sports offered has an equal appeal [as karate]."
