You're not crazy, Mr. Harris. All are sublime. I fell in love with my wife many years ago as she danced to the gut-wrenching strains of the 7th's middle movement. It's the same movement that won the best picture Oscar for the King's Speech. Do you think that movie would have won the Oscar w/o Beethoven's 7th? I think not— March 7, 2012 10:42 a.m.
Coach Turner Promises Miracle Turnaround for His Fantasy Football Team
This explains a great deal.— November 22, 2011 11:30 a.m.
Cost Doubles on High-Speed Rail
I'm with SurfPuppy. What a boondoggle. I can't wait to put this lame dog down at the voter's booth. As is, it's essentially fraud. We voted for $40 billion and $55 tickets, now we've got $100 billion and $108 tickets. I'm sorry, that's not what the voters approved.— November 9, 2011 10:29 a.m.
The Real Brett Ratner Oscar Resignation Story
You wind up with snow white singing proud Mary! That line's going to keep me chuckling all day. Thanks, Mr. Lickona.— November 9, 2011 10:23 a.m.
Breaking! Reader Editor Holman Opens Up and Swallows Pride
Oh snap... this is brilliant. "Sweet, sweet approbation." That's the funniest thing I've read in a long time. Thank you, Mr. Mencken. Don't feel bad, Jim Holman. You steered clear of the Council of Repeated and Unremitting Mutual Backslapping (CRUMB) for as long as you could.— October 27, 2011 3:20 p.m.
Court Orders ACORN Scandal Filmmaker to Turn Over Videos
I suppose Vera asking Hannah Giles how much for a sex session was part of his information gathering on behalf of the cops. And I suppose that ACORN lady who told O'Keefe he could document his 15-YEAR-OLD WHORES shipped in from out of the country as "entertainment workers" was really the result of "heavily edited" footage. Please.— September 28, 2011 12:25 p.m.
Manchester Didn't Rake in Big Bucks on Hotel Sale
Jerry Brown appears to be attempting to eliminate the redevelopment agencies which directly steal money from schools to subsidize multi-millionaires and billionaires. ========================== I agree that redevelopment agencies have outlived their usefulness and have, in many cases, devolved into a feeding trough for developers. But I'm surprised that a guy as sharp as Don Bauder would resort to the kind of campaign-slogan oversimplification I quote above. Would there be more tax money for schools and libraries if the Gaslamp -- a redevelopment project -- were still a sh!thole of brothels, dive bars, and last-stop hotels? Of course not. Thriving businesses and the people they employ pay taxes which fund schools and libraries.— June 24, 2011 10:04 a.m.
Ted Nugent Still Kills and Grills
Mindy, I've been traveling in Asia recently, and I've acquired a taste for dog. That dog you're cuddling looks delicious. I'll give you 10 bucks for it.— June 24, 2011 9:42 a.m.
I'm Sad Lil Sister
Powerful, vivid poem. But should "unsullied when your sane" be unsullied when YOU'RE sane" ?— June 21, 2011 10:44 a.m.
Thor Minimalist Movie Poster: Who Did It Better?
I'm all for minimalism when it's done well. But Williams' poster looks like it was done in 15 minutes by a 12-year-old using the MS Word draw feature. It's a very simple primary yellow lightning bolt -- simple and minimalist are not the same thing -- capped by a big block of background white. I'm sorry, it doesn't look like a hammer. It looks like a yard sign, or a bubble above a comic strip figure, except without words. The white part also looks like the profile of one of those things tortillas come in at Mexican restaurants. Now I'm hungry.— May 9, 2011 4:21 p.m.
