According to a bullentin released by the Escondido Police Department, an Escondido police officer and a field ICE officer have captured an illegal immigrant who had outstanding warrants for lewd acts upon a child. On April 11, 2012, the Escondido police officer stopped a driver for a moving violation. He subsequently discovered that the driver, Antonio Cervantes Sarmiento, had no identification and was offering him a false name and birthdate.
After contacting ICE, a field officer came to the scene and Sarmiento admitted that he was in the country illegally and that the Escondido Police Department had arrested him about ten years ago. An additional records search revealed that Sarmiento had outstanding warrants totalling $600,000. He was cited for the moving violation, and then booked in Vista Jail for the warrants, driving without a license, and providing false information to a police officer.
