A sampling of San Diego's vanity license plates
Great story! Just to add one more... there was the Hooker family in Tucson that had audacity to apply for ‘HOOKER1’ and ended up pressing the issue in court. They were finally able to have the family name on the tag and as far as I know none of them are prostitutes nor do they support the profession. We do have a few rights left (hopefully more since the inauguration) so always press the issue and push the envelope. Rights that are not enjoyed, cherished and struggled for have a tendency to disappear. Freedom and free speech are always worth the effort. KC in NP— March 1, 2009 3:53 p.m.
Cinema Valore - Concession Confessions
Josh, Not to date myself, but as a matter of fact I did catch four innings for the ’84 Yankees when Joel Skinner from La Jolla (also a Mesa College alum) fell out with a mean flu bug halfway through the late season game. We were six up on the Mets when I was pulled off the bench. I had only been on the field a few dozen times warming up but when I walked onto that field for my first game, it was like a dream. I remember the stinging cold like it was yesterday. I had made it, I was finally standing behind the plate, seeing my breath under those lights for the first time. I wiped a tear from my cheek and when I looked down I actually saw steam rising from my mitt like it was a living entity, like the spirit of baseball. For me Josh, it was the spirit of baseball. I remember now... it was a dream. I’m a writer, not a catcher. And the last time I played baseball President Johnson was turning down his party’s presidential nomination. Yes Josh you nailed it, you've outed me. I’m not a ball player and never was. But maybe some day when I hear that cry from just below the Western Metals sign, “Crackerjack,“ I’ll stand, raise my arm and maybe, just maybe that red, blue and gold box will hit me squarely in the hand. I’ll wipe a tear and maybe I’ll see the steam rising. Just don’t sit behind me. You could take a Crackerjack to the head. Ken— November 10, 2008 10:21 a.m.
Cinema Valore - Intermission - Paul Newman
It’s Interesting that you would mention Jimmy Stewart with the Paul Newman story. These two gentlemen were true Hollywood powerhouses. Once Stewart was out from under the ‘studio actor’ contract system and was able to call his own shots, he chose roles that allowed his career to really flourish. He chose parts that were wholesome, where the little guy triumphed over the big and bad guy… and the audiences loved it! Much like Paul Newman, Stewart seized a level of control new to the Hollywood game. Stewart was one of the first actors to receive a percentage of a films gross profit and Newman was one of the first actors able to “green light” a project. These two greats were responsible for much of the quality that we see in the classic films as they helped set the bar extremely high for a lot of actors as well as the studios. They understood that if you make a good film you will make a good profit. The bar seems to have been reset to - make a good profit, it keeps the investors quiet. To quote former Disney head, Michael Eisner "We have no obligation to make history. We have no obligation to make art. We have no obligation to make a statement. To make money is our only obligation." (Ref: The 5 Dollar Movie) Ken C.— October 27, 2008 8:47 a.m.
Cinema Valore - Dark Knight
As more episodes of Cinema Valoré are produced and aired I can only hope you will enjoy our reviews and understand the value we see in movies and the cinematic experience. As well I trust you'll see the light and agree with me and not that weird Josh guy. Sheesh, he couldn't find a good reel of film if was in his ten dollar popcorn. Ken C.— October 17, 2008 4:32 p.m.
