North Park Skaters
Ahh, you had me dreamin of the good ole days. I too grew up in North Park, and even though we moved to Normal Heights, PB and even Oregon at one time, I still found my way home to North Park. We went through the video game phase (that arcade up on Grim St. where you paid $2 and played as much as you want for 2 hours)...then came the skateboard phase...the BMX phase...I came about 10 years before you, but I may have been at Tuba Man's while you all were skating by outside. North Park was a perfect little neighborhood. It had nice houses mixed in with cheap apartments, so the families with little or no income could have a nice neighborhood to live in. Ahh, Morley Field, the place dreams are made of. At least horny teeenagers dreams. Finding that perfect spot down by the iceplant to experiment with a green leafy substance. Riding wheelies around the sidewalk that encircled the fields while listening to my Sony Walkman BLARING Van Halen. Playing baseball, and having all the girls want to wear your All-Star jacket. Sneaking into the pool late at night and skinny dipping. Hanging out with the cuties working in the snack bar, you know who you are. Oooh, then we grew a little pubic hair and before you know it, we thought we knew everything. How adult we were, smoking cigarrettes and jakartas, scoring that Hawaiin pleasure every summer from Ronnie, buying beer and hard alcohol from Suzys Market at 30th and Upas. The way I see it, that liquor store clerk helped me realize very early on, that I absolutely did not like drinking, thanks Suzys Market! North Park holds in it, my entire early life. I would never change anything about those years. I am who I am because of what happened in North Park...I am in a new stage now, with a family, and I would never dream of telling my kids some of the stuff that we did back then, but I'll surely never forget... Peace...— June 18, 2009 1:53 p.m.
