Unwarranted Demise of Mar Vista Middle School
Thank you for the detailed information. It will be interesting to watch and see whether this change raises test scores. If it doesn't ,the district/society/parents etc. will have to quit singing the "blame the teacher" blues.— April 3, 2013 5:59 p.m.
Sweetwater school district board seeks to silence opposition
Employees have faced this type of intimidation for years and are afraid to speak out against questionable educational practices that have been forced upon our students. When a highly respected teacher at my site questioned the implementation of poorly planned curriculum, a district leader called our principal and told him/her to discipline this teacher.— March 16, 2013 7:11 a.m.
Sweetwater school board to address campaign spending limits
I can't wait to see board members try and squirm out of this. Thank you Maty Adato.— February 19, 2013 5:59 a.m.
Sweetwater school district’s weird, failed real estate deals
Meanwhile, class size has increased from 28:1 to 31:1, which is manifested as a cap of 182 students per day per teacher. I had 43 students in one of my classes last semester.— February 8, 2013 10:18 a.m.
Sweetwater board meeting times may change
Do you think they are getting their ducks in a row in order to vote on paying the legal bills for those indicted by the grand jury? The Hilltop gym full of angry stakeholders forced them to back off the issue last year. Not many of those people who attended then would be able to attend in the middle of the afternoon .— January 26, 2013 6:22 p.m.
Sweetwater board meeting times may change
First, they moved closed session from after the regular open meeting to before so that the public would have to arrive early to get a seat and then wait hours (at times until 2 or 3 AM) before parents, teachers and students could speak to the board. Then they cut speaking time from 3 minutes to 1 or 2 so that it was nearly impossible to present a coherent argument. All of the district reports and presentations were scheduled before the public speaking section of the agenda so that people had to wait until 7:30 or later to begin to share their concerns with the board. Once at least, the public speaking session of the meeting was moved to the end and when the meeting went past 10:00 the rest of it, including the public speaking section was just postponed. Agendas are posted at the last minute and meeting locations are changed. Administrators are ordered to attend and fill the seats while the public waits outside. Chairs are removed from the board room so that fewer people can attend. Now, they want to change the meeting time to early afternoon so that students, teachers and working parents are shut out of the process. WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO HIDE??????? ALL of south county needs to show up at the meeting at 6PM on Monday and loudly voice our outrage.— January 26, 2013 6:12 p.m.
Serious supporters of Sweetwater trustee Pearl Quiñones
Alex orignially served a two-year term and ran unopposed for a second two-year term. Because SEA positions have term limits, he could not run for a third term. After Sam Lucero's first term many members urged Alex to run again, which he did and won. During the last election another member ran against him and Alex won with 71% of the votes. There will always be individuals who lambast the union leadership because of personal gripes or vendettas, but believe me Alex is respected and supported by the majority teachers in this district. Education is not a business . We are a service and because of that , we are labor intensive. Believe me, teachers work hard and earn their salaries. If I had comp time for all of the unpaid hours I've worked over the years, I could retire years earlier.— January 22, 2013 5:30 p.m.
Serious supporters of Sweetwater trustee Pearl Quiñones
I witnessed the verbal attack from the counselor when the teacher mentioned that Pearl had only won the election with 35% of the votes. That was the comment that unleashed first a verbal attack and second a stare down. I commend the teacher for keeping her cool and not responding in kind.— January 16, 2013 6:15 p.m.
Former Charger Seeks Seat on Sweetwater Schools Board
God help us all in the Sweetwater District if this man and/or Quinones are elected. Bertha Lopez and George Cameron are a real threat to the culture of corruption in SUHSD and are our only chance of salvation.— November 3, 2012 12:04 p.m.
10News and Sweetwater's John McCann, True Patriots?
I too attended that meeting and others where McCann shamelessly used his military service to promote himself. I too am not a member of Occupy Sweetwater, and I too sent a letter complaining about the newscast to Channel 10. Whenever McCann is criticized, he covers himself in our nation's flag and makes accusations against his opponents. Do you hear echoes of Joe McCarthy? I do. " Are you now or have you ever been a communist?" " Are you now or have you ever been a critic of the leadership of SUHSD?" Mr. McCarthy, excuse me, Mr. McCann needs to understand that he is a member of the Board of Trustees, not a member of the House Un-American Activities Committee.— September 14, 2012 6:04 a.m.
