Diary of a SealWatcher
What a great article. Emotions run high in regards to the ‘Children’s Pool’ which I thought was a Seal Cove. Let me give La Jolla a solid, economic reason to back the seals. Tourism. I am the tourist who came from Canada and spent over two thousand bucks on my California trip. Each time I visit, I include a trip to La Jolla because of the initial time when we walked the cove and delighted at the Seal Colony. Dining and shopping added to La Jolla’s purses that day. The next time I brought friends and were aghast at the bathers I saw there; some were actively tormenting the seals. I had not kept up with the news, and when I visited yesterday I returned with a knot in the pit of my stomach after seeing the beach in full swing with additions to the stairs and lifeguard towers, looking for all the world like a circus. Couldn't see many seals. Your tourists are not going to La Jolla to watch kids on the beach. And with all the beautiful beaches in California why this one has become such a sticking point just shows the utter stupidity, pigheadedness and ecological backwardness of the people of the town, so much so that I won’t return. So someone in the last century bequeathed a beach for children and we must keep it? They used to beat children back then too and think that was fine. Keep your filthy beach, let your wildlife die, I will not spend a cent in your jurisdiction ever again.— June 14, 2011 11:57 p.m.
