The Move to Freelance
This is a pretty tough time to run a daily newspaper, and I doubt Jeff Light will increase the UT's profitability by increasing book and museum coverage, or by declaring war on SD's local government and business community. This is just wishful thinking. Most self-styled intellectuals in SD never really took the UT that seriously anyway. Twenty years ago, when I was a student at UCSD, many of my politicial science professors made fun of the newspaper, and most of them made clear they got their national/world news from other sources. I doubt Light can save the UT by appealing to their bohemian tastes and preferences. Light is trying to make the paper more user friendly, more local in its focus, which is probably the best strategy. Then again, there may be NO good strategy, since newspapers are folding right and left in the US, just like independent booksellers.— July 2, 2010 11:19 a.m.
Old Men in Chula Vista are Different Now
surfpuppy Back when I went to school in Chula Vista in the late 1970s and 1980s, the schools were still pretty white, but there was a significant Hispanic minority. I'm Eurasian myself. The nice thing was that we all got along back then, I don't remember race being an issue at all.— May 2, 2010 12:10 p.m.
Old Men in Chula Vista are Different Now
Ha ha, Nan! Of course you're absolutely right, but I'm stuck in a time warp of sorts, as you can probably tell. I yearn for the older people of my youth. As for the Bob Dylan stories, I'll think of the best one and post it in a later entry.— May 2, 2010 10:28 a.m.
Sometimes, You Can Go Home
