No Sun God class-dodging, professors told
As someone who has worked on campus for over a decade, and was there when the Sun God festival really was a day of revelry in the mid-2000's, I think it should be pointed out that the "Increasing numbers" of alcohol poisonings is almost certainly due to increased enforcement - vans and rent-a-cops circling campus and throwing any visibly inebriated student into a drunk tank and processing them. UCSD admins would really just prefer to get rid of Sun God altogether, but they need it for the PR value to counter the "nerd" reputation to incoming students. Even in it's heyday, Sun God was no worse than the tailgate parties at most Big10 schools - the only difference is that those students are not all learning their drinking limit at the same party. I am quite frankly appalled at the policies being implemented this year seeking to prevent students from socializing or hosting friends on campus - it will just encourage drunk driving as attendees leave the festival before they have sobered or to get to parties off-campus. Then next year we will be reading your article about the rash of DUIs. Then again, with Snoop Dog headlining, maybe attendees will lay of the booze and instead feverishly violate the campus' zero-tolerance no-smoking policy instead.— April 25, 2015 2:39 p.m.
